John Clancey Race Trophies
Trophies
The John Clancey race offers trophy awards to 6 different age categories for both men and women. That's 36 trophies. If any age category is short of entrants those trophies will be distributed to other age categories. Also race divisions exist for teams, Clydesdales, and Aero (shaved head). Also special awards are presented connecting the race to its past history. Trophies are wooden tug boats similar to trophies handed out at Tugs Swim Run Swim races in the 70's and 80's.
Trophies | What | Picture |
Youngest/Oldest | Tugs races always presented trophies to the youngest and oldest person completing the race. We continue that tradition
Ed Jerome | Tugs races always presented a trophy to the first person at the halfway point in race. We present that award to the first to the halfway point in the run segment of the race. Ed Jerome was from Lancaster, California and would spend his vacations in San Diego and participating in local races. Ed was a serious competitor. I first came across Ed at a Coronado 10k in late July 1981. He had a station wagon loaded with all kinds of lotions to use before and after race. Never saw anything like it. I believe he ran something like a 36 minute 10K.. Later in the week I came across at him at the Dave Pain race. After the race, I came across Ed writing down the names all the guys who had beat him. I asked him why? He replied "I want the names of these guys for my files". I am very happy to say I am on that list. Ed was later killed on his bicycle training for the Ironman. Ed was a serious competitor. We honor his memory with a competition to be the first person at the halfway point in the run.
Dave Pain | The Dave Pain award is in honor of race founder Dave Pain. Dave started the race in 1972. The original course started with a run beginning at the Mission Bay Hilton in San Diego over to Fiesta Island. The swim was from Fiesta Island back to the Mission Bay Hilton. Dave Pain also came up with the idea to have age divisions categories before any one thought of it. In 1977 Dan Rock won the Dave Pain race. After the race Dan asked Dave "Hey where is my trophy?". Dave pointed over to a trash can full of ice cold beers and replied "Theirs your trophy". Thus a simple trophy with just a beer can mounted on it. We stage a special competition amongst randomly race finishers to compete for the Dave Pain award.
Aero Division | We are the only race in the world that offers an Aero division. To participate in the Aero division you must have a completely shaved head. Must be chrome. Open to men and women. Two trophies awarded. First and second place.

Tallyho | The Tallyho award is presented to the person who brings the most spirit to the race. The award in in honor of Lord "Tallyho" Blears. Lord Blears was a professional wrestler in Hawaii during the 50's and 60's. I once saw an interview with him where he talked about every day he had to think up with something new. One of his favorites was when a wrestler from Louisiana came to Hawaii for some matches. One was in Hilo Hawaii. When the wrestler was announced to the crowd he grabbed the mike and spoke to the Hilo crowd with this. "How are all my fans in High Low (drawing it out). The crowd went crazy booing. Lord Blears was in hysterics. It is with this spirit we honor Lord Blears. You might have caught him on some of the ABC's team Super star competitions officiating the tug of war competitions. He was also the long time announcer for the Waikiki Rough Water swim. He stayed until the last swimmer finished. He is also the father for the first women's professional women's surfer Laura Blears Ching. We are sad to say Lord Blears passed away in 2016.
Milt Hunt | The Milt Hunt award first awarded in 2016 is the for a team consisting of a man and woman. The award is only for the team placing first. This award is in memory of Denny Shea who passed away in 2016. Denny was a race regular since 2001. Denny also had completed over 35 straight AFC races. He was a real competitor.
