7:15 AM Home Wake up Ah, Shit. Its drizzling and all glue on the trophies have liquified. What are the odds? Rain in San Diego, July Wait to it stops drizzling and re glue trophies
7:30 AM Home Get race result cards ready Will use 4 index file containers to hold cards, 1 for all entrants, 1 for race starters, 1 for finishers, and another for Race results. Make sure everthing is ready. For this manual system, all cards need to be held in a container. If not they get screwed up. Ever play 52 card pickup. Needed another container for age category winners, we got screwed up during the awards.
9:00 AM Home Check for any new entrants. We have a few. Add to our manual system, prepare cards.
10:16 AM Radio Shack Get Camera Stand Decided I needed another camera stand. Some camera operators have difficulty keeping the camera steady. Two years ago, Sean had some good coverage but the camera was alway moving. Ugh. Not Used
10:26 AM CVS Get water, soda, and ice chest. For aid station and after race drinks. The beer ban is a real bummer. No beer. Get ice on way to race start. Forgot to get the ice on way over to the race
10:45 AM Home Scouting Reports Scouts return with reports that their is a vibe out there on the beach about the race. Legal sources cite need for liability waiver. Something on my list but could not get to. Will have to do before race
11:16 AM Play it again Sports Get Perfect Pushups Prize drawing for the race. I also wanted to have a Tugs Tank Top to go with it. but no time to get shirts from printer. This will now be the only gift you will ever receive from me. A Tugs tank top and perfect push ups. Will hold drawing for tank tops and beer glasses, but catch up with winners later. A major pain.
11:24 AM Home Call Kim Need someone to watch race stuff after drop off while I go to pick up Sean in case familly coming from LA doesnt make it. Kim she will be there at 2:00 PM. Will hold drawing for tank tops and beer glasses, but catch up with winners later. A major pain.
11:30 AM Home Start loading up. Cant believe I got it all on the truck. Signs, equipment containers, ice chests, 2 bikes, and tugs blimp. Loaded, what did i forget?
1:45 PM Home Leave for race start Finally Go Go Go, running late
1:53 PM Movin Shoes Pick up Race Place Need a sample of a race waiver to use for the John Clancey race. Got it. Go, Go, Go, running late. Forgot to get ice.
2:12 PM South Mission Beach Drop off race stuff Arrive I see Kim. Relieved. Gotta drop off and go get Sean in Chula Vista. As I pull in, Terrance greets me. Beautiful. My family had arrived. Could not do this without there help. Two years ago, they got caugtht in traffic and didnt get here till after the race. I'm stressed. Gotta lot to do. We unload.
2:30 PM South Mission Beach Race Preparation I go over race timeline with everyone. Get my cousin Mike and nice Katie to work on waiver. Go over sign in and how card system will work. Go over setting up the signs and setting up for race sign in. Kim leaves for awhile and will get ice upon her return. Team briefed on time line up to race start.
2:50 PM South Mission Beach Go get Sean Suppose to pick up Sean after school at 3:00 PM. (I hate year around school, dont try to convince me other wise. It sucks). Leave
3:20 PM Chula Vista Pick Up Sean Sean is ready to go. Gotta get the live broadcast going by 4:30 PM. Brief camera operators. Head back to Chula Vista.
3:55 PM South Mission Beach Arrive back to race start Gotta get up to set up the live broadcast. As I arrive, I notice the signs are set up too low. Direct team to try to get them higher. Assemble the Tugs blimp which will be used to haul shoes. Signs put higher.
4:03 PM South Mission Beach Head to Sandbar Grap briefcase which has laptop, camera, and cables. Also, I have 75 foot extenstion chord and camera stand. I am ready to haul equipment up to Sandbar on bike, but Robert and Skov arrive. I give the equipment to Robert and tell him I will meet him and Skov up at the Sandbar. Skov's son Brian will be one of our camera operators. I tell him, I will be back. If anything is missing, I am screwed on the broadcast. Head to Sandbar on bike. Its amazing with just a small amount of equipment that can be hauled on bike, I can broadcast live on the internet.
4:12 PM Sandbar Setup for live broadcast of beer stop. Arrive at the Sandbar, Skov has the equipment out front. Robert is parking the car. We enter. The beer stop area is reserved. We setup. First thing, find a plug. I was ready to go without power but would have to use a different camera. We find one, hook up. Boot up the computer, connect the camera, find the Sandbar wifi, and start the broadcast. We are live at about 4:25 PM. Rich, a coworker arrives. Beautiful. He will run the camera and computer. I brief him and leave. We are live from the Sandbar.
5:03 PM South Mission Beach Brief Camera Operators I arrive. Part Ranger arrived earlier and briefed team on Parks an Recreation rules for conducting an event of more than 50 people. We are under that limit. Orders signs taken down. Glad I missed that. My nephew Terrance handles the matter well. Far better than I could have. Ranger leaves infomation. I had looked on the Park and Recreation web site and could not make head or tales of the what are the rules. The brochure says event limit of 75. This matter will have to be addresed next year.  Jeremy, Charlie, Brian, and Sam are briefed on where to film. Also, video guys are briefed on how to run cameras. Ready
5:20 PM South Mission Beach Brief Racers Give a half ass race briefing. Introduce Tom Warren. Hand mega phone off to Alan Olson to run race. Check.
5:30 PM South Mission Beach Start race. Terrance our timer doesnt have watch. I pull it out of my pocket. Can't figure how to get to work. So I take mind off and hand it to him. I start the race. Race started. I have to get the IDs up to the Sandbar before the racers get there.
5:41 PM Sandbar ID's First, I get Murphy to ride Tugs Blimp up to swim start. I look back at Murphy and start laughing. Thanks Murphy. Get the ID's to Sandbar 45 seconds before racers arrive. Whew. Just missed a disaster there.
5:47 PM Swim Start Chit Chat with Murphy Really happy Murphy had made it out. Leave for race start.
5:55 PM South Mission Beach Set up for results I get back and realize, I forgot to the the aid station setup. Katie and Cary's son Kyle set it up. Get Sharon, Randy, Mike, and Cary to handle results. Diane, who will post results arrives. Ready for results.
6:05 PM South Mission Beach Waiting for results. Waiting for Sean to get results up the race central but cant find him. Doesnt anybody realize what I am trying to do here. Sean found.
6:10 PM Race Central Results being posted. Diane write the results, I begin writing down age categories places. We are producing results within 10 minutes of someone finishing. Once we got Sean bringing the results. We are rolling. My goal was 5 minutes.
6:40 PM Race Central Last person finishes. Have to start awards. I get Bruce to take over for me. Robert and Skov setup. We start Awards. On time.
6:45 PM South Mission Beach Awards. We have awarding of the coats. Murphy removes his name from the Turd list. I forget to introduce former winners. Trophies are presented. We have a few glicthes. Missed the 40-49 for mens and womens divisions. Get that straighten out. Also,  have drawings for Tugs beer glasses and Tank tops. Didnt have time to pick up from printer. Will have to get prizes out to winners later. Well much better than last year, but still gliches.
7:30 PM South Mission Beach Over. Last year, I was really frustrated. Cameras failed. We were late. This year I had a bit of satisfaction. Even though we had some gliches in the results and awards ceremony. We were posting results somewhat promptly. All the cameras worked and we have some great coverage of the race with photos and videos.  And we were live on the internet. Not bad.
8:00 PM Sandbar Post race party at Sandbar I can only stay awhile. Leave about 9:00 PM. Brad Golden buys me a beer. Thanks Brad. Next year.
All of us, John's family and friends really appreciate everyone for coming out to the race this year and look forward to seeing you all again next year. THANK YOU.
